Astana Motors has presented the first batch of locally produced pickups from Chinese automaker Great Wall Motor at its commercial vehicle plant in Almaty. The event brought together journalists, bloggers, and automotive experts, who were among the first to see the new locally manufactured models and test them in real-world conditions.
A total of 305 pickups have been produced in Kazakhstan, including 233 units of the Wingle 7 and 72 units of the Poer.
Pickups traditionally occupy a distinct niche at the intersection of commercial vehicles and passenger cars. These models are in demand across sectors such as construction, agriculture, and logistics, while also appealing to customers with active lifestyles. A key advantage of both the Wingle 7 and Poer is their spacious cargo bed and high payload capacity, with the ability to carry up to 975 kg. The cargo platform features a protective coating, enhancing durability and ease of use.

The GWM Poer is a full-size body-on-frame pickup with a 3,230 mm wheelbase and overall dimensions of 5,416 × 1,947 × 1,884 mm, designed for both work and everyday use. The body structure incorporates high-strength steel and a ladder-frame chassis. The model is equipped with a 2.0-liter turbocharged petrol engine producing 218 hp, paired with an 8-speed ZF automatic transmission and a four-wheel drive system (TOD) with a BorgWarner transfer case.
The model is available in five colors: white, black, grey, blue, and red. Blue and red are available by pre-order. Pricing starts from KZT 16,182,800, including maximum benefits.

The GWM Wingle 7 - is a robust, utilitarian body-on-frame pickup. It measures 5,395 × 1,800 × 1,860 mm, with a 3,350 mm wheelbase. The model has recently undergone a facelift, featuring a redesigned grille, an updated multimedia system, a new steering wheel, and revised wheel designs. Two engine options are available: a 2.4-liter naturally aspirated 4-cylinder petrol engine (149 hp, 220 Nm) paired with a 5-speed manual transmission, and a 2.0-liter turbocharged diesel engine (143 hp, 315 Nm) combined with a 6-speed manual transmission. It is currently the only pickup on the Kazakh market offering a diesel option.
The model is available in two colors: metallic white and metallic silver. Pricing starts from KZT 12,502,800 for the petrol version and from KZT 13,422,800 for the diesel version.

According to Eduard Kuznetsov, Director of Distribution at Haval Motor Kazakhstan:

“Pickups are one of the most versatile segments and are currently undergoing rapid transformation. On one hand, demand from businesses remains strong across construction, agriculture, and extractive industries. On the other, interest from private customers is growing, driven by the need for off-road capability, functionality, and comfort. Localization allows us to offer the market a well-balanced product in terms of price and equipment, adapted to Kazakhstan’s operating conditions.”
The practical part of the event included a test drive along a mixed-surface route with off-road sections. Participants evaluated handling, traction, and vehicle performance under different driving conditions. To simulate real use, the pickups were loaded with cargo, allowing participants to assess their behavior under load. Weather conditions also played a role: rainfall on the day of the test drive created low-grip conditions, providing an additional opportunity to evaluate performance.
Automotive blogger Timur Mustafayev commented:
“The pickup segment has traditionally been quite austere. With the Wingle 7 and Poer, we see a different approach—modern equipment, advanced technologies, and competitive pricing. Thanks to localization, these vehicles are significantly more affordable than some imported alternatives, while maintaining environmental standards and offering customization options for business needs. The use of modern, efficient engines is also an important factor for the commercial segment.”

Automotive expert Artur Miskaryan added:
“Wingle 7 and Poer represent two different use cases. The former is practical and utilitarian, while the latter is more versatile. Today, pickups meet the needs of small and medium-sized businesses in urban environments, while also being used for leisure—outdoor trips, fishing, and travel. Looking ahead, they can also serve as a base for further customization, including camper-style solutions.”
In Kazakhstan, the GWM brand is officially represented by Haval Motor Kazakhstan, part of Astana Motors. The company currently operates 33 dealerships nationwide, offering HAVAL crossovers, TANK SUVs, and Wingle 7 and Poer pickups.
